Typical situation for a Christian teen girl: You make
Christ the Lord of your life, and you’re revved-up
(vroom, vroom), on fire and ready to share your
faith with anyone and everyone.
Over time, however, you lose your passion and zeal,
as if someone poured ice water on your spiritual fire. Or
worse, God seems to have taken a one-way trip to
Neptune. I know the feeling — been there, done that.
Most Christians experience these seasons on
occasion; a new perspective is often required to see
them through. Keep these thoughts in mind when you
face a time of spiritual dehydration.
1. Being a Christian doesn’t mean life will be
perfect. Jesus said that when we follow Him
we will have times of trouble. (See Matthew 5:10-12
and John 15:20.) If you don’t believe me, then just read
about the lives of godly men such as Paul, Moses and
David. Being smart doesn’t eliminate problems, but
godly wisdom makes them more tolerable.
2. God will never leave, even
if you do something stupid. Look up
Deuteronomy 31:6. In this chapter, Moses commissions
the next generation and reminds them of God’s
faithfulness. Moses’ time was coming to an end, but the
Israelites didn’t need to fear. They needed to depend
on God, not Moses. On whom are you depending?
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither
angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future,
nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything
else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the
love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans
8:38-39). Nothing can separate you from God’s love.
Take comfort in that promise.
3. Satan’s influence is
underestimated. Satan works overtime on
Christians. He’s far more intelligent than all the brilliant
scientists, but he isn’t wise. “For our struggle is not
against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against
the authorities, against the powers of this dark world
and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly
realms” (Ephesians 6:12).
You’re in a spiritual battle, and you need to be ready.
Memorize Ephesians 6:10-18 to prepare for battle.
Remember, God is still in control, and He knows your
weaknesses and why you’re experiencing a spiritually
dry season.
In time you will see your passion for God restored as
you take on His perspective.
Tips to Keep Faith
Alive
Read your Bible daily.
Proverbs 3:5 says to lean not on your own
understanding. Instead, depend on God’s Truth. Put on
the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:13-17). Make the
Sword of the Sprit — the Word of God — your weapon
of choice.
Pray every day.
Talk to God about the good and the bad. Be honest, not
religious. Make it a habit to pray wherever, whenever.
Find friends who are
committed to their relationship with God.
Check out Ecclesiastes 4:9-10.
Keep a list nearby to jot
down all the good things God has done for you over
the years. One of the Israelites’ main
problems was they kept forgetting all the ways God took
care of them.
Realize God is testing your
faithfulness. Check out the story of
Habakkuk.
